Sambar
(Cervus nuicolor)


  Habitat:  broad-leaved forests, needle-leaved woods, bushes and grass slopes in the rink of forests in low and middle-height mountains.

  Feeding habits: nibble at tree leaves and grass.

  Food:  the stem, leaves, flowers and fruits of vegetation.

  Size: with a body length of 1.8-2 m and a tail length of 24 cm; weight: female about 120 kg, and male 180 kg.

  Habits:  they like to live together and they are often in pairs or in groups with 3-5 deer. During daytime, they will relax in grasslands or in forests and they go out during the night. They often calls when they go out during the night and they act the most frequently when it rains. The animal is born vigil and is good at running and jumping. It likes to play in water or bathe in mud. It spends more time in water during summer and they can swim several kilometers. It has the habit to suck salty soil. In Yunnan and Hainan Island, people have raised sambars for quite a long time.
