Gaur
(Bos gaurus)


  Habitat:  broad-leaved forests, broad-leaved and needle-leaved forests and grass slopes in mountains of tropical and sub-tropical areas.

  Feeding habits: nibble at tree leaves and grass with its mouth.

  Food:  all kinds of grass, bamboo leaves and bamboo shoots.

  Size: with a body length of 2 m and a height of 2 m; weight: 1000-1500 kg. 

  Habits:  act in forests in small groups. During daytime, gaurs rest in shadowy places and go out to seek for food in early morning and at dusk. Gaurs have sharp senses of hearing and smell. They will run away when they found human beings are close. They become fierce only when they are injured or are cornered by human beings and they attack on people only then. Gaurs are the largest wild oxen in the world today. There is seldom any beast can harm them in forests.

  Distribution:  South Yunnan.

  Level of protection:  Class I key state protection animal of China.
