Various Titles for Lakes

What kind of names does the lake have?

The lake possesses various expressions in different languages: "Lake"in English, "Lac"in French, "See m.-n"in German, and "Ozepo"in Russian, which are all simple and singular. However in China, the titles for lakes are many and varied in different regions. For instance:

Hu (Taihu lake, West Lake(Hangzhou)) 

Po (Lop Nul(Po), Liangshan Po)

Chi (Dian Chi, Fukangtian Chi) 

Dang (Yuan Dang, Huangtian Dang)

Dian (Baiyang Dian) 

Yang  (Ma Yang, Jinyu yang)

Jiu (East Jiu, West Jiu) 

Pao (Moon Pao, Chagan Pao)

Hai (Er Hai, Cao Hai, Juyan Hai) 

Co (Nam Co, Yamzhog Co)

Nur (Chaha Nur, Tengge'er Nur) 

Caka (Yibu Caka, Chabyer Caka)

Nao (Chahan Nao, Jiuliancheng Nao) 

Wa (Tuanpo Wa, Wen'an Wa)

Can you imagine there are so many forms of expressions for lakes? However, we only call it "lake"academically, regardless of all the nicknames mentioned above.

All the expressions for lakes are characterized by regional distribution, and feature the nations and languages. It is called Hu in the Han nationality; Co or Caka in the Zan (Tibet) nationality; Luo'er in the Meng nationality; and Hai in the Bai nationality. Even within the Han nationality, there exist different expressions due to the local dialects. For example, the lake is called Dang, Jiu and Yang in Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, and Shanghai Municipality, Po in Shandong Province, Dian in Hebei Province, and Haizi in Sichuan Province. As you can see, a common name for lakes contains so much connotation of each nation.
